Bridges Pointe was organized in 1996 by staff and volunteers affiliated with Duke Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center as Bridges Housing Corporation. The initial goal was to establish a residential service for young adults with sickle cell disease. Collaborators and representives from variety of community agencies participated in the planning and development of the residential plan of services for Bridges. The plan of services evolved to embrace a broader vision and mission. The evolution of the organization resulted in a name change in 1999 to the Bridges Pointe, Inc. Steps have been taken to establish a community-based presence and social support center for the sickle cell population in the Triangle. Emphasis has been placed on services tailored to meet the needs of the adolescent and youg adults, 18-35.

To promote the development of supportive services for young adults with sickle cell disease: to empower them for independent living: and to enhance their quality of life to of their social and economic lives.
V
ision
Bridges Pointe will enable young adults who are struggling with the physical and psychosocial complications of sickle cell disease to transition to adulthood with dignity. The plan will tailor independent living apartments and supportive services to empower this group to master basic life skills, to become more self-sufficient and productive, and to experience a bett quality of life.
